The Fleeces and Where They Come From

At The Snuggly Viking, every piece I create begins its journey right here on my small, high-welfare farm in Suffolk — with alpaca fibre also sourced from a trusted farm in Norfolk.

All of my fleeces are sourced from small, high-welfare farms in Suffolk. These are not industrial operations; each sheep is raised with care, grazing freely on lush pastures, living a calm and natural life. The wellbeing of these animals is of paramount importance to me, and I choose my suppliers carefully to ensure that only the highest quality, ethically sourced wool makes its way into my studio.

Once the fleece arrives, the transformation begins. Each batch is hand-washed and hand-dyed in Norfolk, preserving its natural softness and beauty while adding subtle, rich colours that complement the fibres’ natural tones. I add a few drops of essential oils during the final rinse before dyeing, giving each piece a soft, natural scent and an extra touch of care.0 Whether it’s for curls, components, or finished pieces, I work with each fleece individually, treating it with the attention and care it deserves.

The fleeces themselves can be purchased as components for makers who want to create their own pieces, or they can be incorporated into my finished products. Every item I create is unique, a reflection of both the natural character of the fleece and the hands that craft it. No two pieces are ever the same, and each carries a little piece of the farm and the land it came from.

Ethical sourcing and sustainability are at the heart of my practice. By choosing to work with small-scale farms, I can ensure that the animals are treated with respect and that the fibre’s journey from pasture to product is transparent and traceable. It’s this dedication that allows me to offer not just beautiful pieces, but pieces that my customers can feel good about owning.

From the rolling fields of Suffolk to the cosy studio in Norfolk, the journey of each fleece is a story of care, craft, and individuality. When you hold a piece of wool from The Snuggly Viking, you are holding the culmination of 15 years of experience, a passion for craftsmanship, and a commitment to quality and sustainability.
